Your Tax Dollars Pay For This, And You Should Be Appalled

Army officers who want to work are sitting around doing nothing.

As a big supporter of the U.S. military, I am shocked to know of a type of waste that is just mind-boggling.

Every six weeks or so, the U.S. Army graduates a class of 80 -160 Officer Candidates at Fort Benning in Georgia. Officer Candidate School is a very competitive program and includes some of the smartest, most fit, disciplined, college graduates who have been vetted during a rigorous and lengthy application period. The top 5 percent (approximately) of the class become Military Intelligence Officers and are ready for the next level of training.

To proceed to the next level of training, the officer needs top security clearance, so he/she is held up from training until they are cleared.

At Fort Benning, we (the taxpayer) pay for these soldiers, currently, about 40, to be housed and fed, as well as their officer salary and housing allowance while they wait, and wait... and wait. Some have been there for more than 8 months as there is a backlog of people awaiting security clearance. They do not work except for an occasional task; they work out and socialize, and slowly, month after month, morale plummets as their psyche deteriorates.

The type of soldier in this hold-over situation probably has not sat still for a day in their entire life. They are Division 1 athletes, Ivy League academics, and prior service men and women who subsequently attained a college degree and demonstrated excellence. They could have chosen from many careers, but they chose to serve our country.

We take the best of the best and stop them dead in their tracks. These soldiers signed a contract with our county to work, they want to work, are paid to work, and they are sitting idle and demoralized.

We are paying for this. American taxpayers should be appalled!
