She really did transform news as we know it.

Arianna Huffington lives some of the time in Brentwood, that posh section of LA mostly known for OJ Simpson.

I started the Brentwood News years ago, and I've had the pleasure of meeting Arianna Huffington a few times.

I was invited to a big event at her house once.  We put her on the cover of the Brentwood News.

This was back when she was "just" a political pundit, famous enough even then.

But then she started Huffington Post, largely because Arianna thought at the time that the mainstream press wasn't doing enough to question George W. Bush's rush to war.

By many accounts, many members of the mainstream media tossed their objectivity overboard and helped the country rush into a war that it now deeply regrets.   In the aftermath of 9/11, Americans were ready for revenge.

But was the detour into Iraq -- which brought about a massive disruption in the Middle East, including the rise of ISIS -- even smart?  Arianna and a few others thought the answer was a clear "no" and she acted on that belief by starting Huffington Post.

The aggregator news model pioneered by Huffington Post (and employed liberally here at THE LATEST) completely blind-sided newspaper dinosaurs.  Newspapers never really knew what hit them.

The Huffington Post also did a terrific job making commentary and community part of the deal.  Legacy news companies always treated readers as something to be tolerated, but not necessarily encouraged.

Some have looked at what we're doing at THE LATEST and say it reminds them of the Huffington Post, at least a little bit.

I think THE LATEST does more, actually -- try some searches using our search bar -- but I understand the comparison.

Where we differ, however, is in the partisanship department.

Clearly the Huffington Post is designed to appeal to a liberal audience -- just as FOX News seeks to grab conservative viewers.  Politics has now become a blood sport, a form of entertainment.

At THE LATEST, we go out of our way to showcase the same story from the perspective of multiple media outlets -- liberal, conservative, moderate -- including even a little fringe element now and then.

We also encourage opinion writers from a wide range of views to weigh in.  While the world heads in the direction "mean and nasty," at THE LATEST, we want to be the folks who wear the white hats.  We seek to host a civil dialogue that leads to insight.  Ideas are powerful; together let's explore them.

If you are a writer and find any of this appealing, I encourage you to scroll to the bottom of our page and click on "become a writer."  People of good will and open minds are especially welcome.  Together we can build the future of journalism.
