If history repeats itself, our first heavy rain and snow will come around Thanksgiving Holiday.

Several of us old-timers were discussing the weather and what is happening to our forest after a long period of no rain. Much of our history about the weather shows that our first heavy rain and snow comes near Thanksgiving Holiday. According to some weather reports, it has snowed in the Sierra Nevada Mountains within the last week, just like it does every year. If history repeats itself, it will get hot again for several weeks, but nights and early mornings will be cold with slippery ice forming before sunrise.

(Just remember, when you see a bright shiny spot on the roads or pavement, it's probably ice. Slow down; don’t use your breaks for quick stops unless it’s a dire emergency, and let your car slow on its own or put it into a lower gear if you can.)

There was a report on tv about trees dying in our forest, and big sections of pine trees were the affected species. The report said that pine trees need a great deal of water to keep out bugs. The water drives the bugs out before they can destroy the tree’s trunk. When there is a drought, the bugs can eat into the heart of the tree’s trunk and kill the tree—there is no way to get rid of these bugs after they've infiltrated the tree. The only way to truly get rid of them, we were told, is to cut out and replant the infested section of forest. However, you have to wait for a year before replanting to make sure that there is no more infestation in that section.

If you drive into the Sierras or fly over the Sierras during the summer, you will see sections of pine trees dying because of the lack of water. One question comes to mind: is this one of the ways that nature regenerates its forest? Nature has amazing ways of replenishing our forest with trees.

Since we had a good winter last year, let’s see what nature has in store for us this year.
