Why President Trump Cut Funding to UNRWA

The poisonous indoctrination of young Palestinians to hate Jews needs to stop if there’s ever going to be peace in the Middle East.

President Trump has cut all U.S. funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency – the U.N. agency founded in 1947 that oversees Palestinian social and educational service – an organization that many believe is sabotaging the peace process.

Obstacles to a peace accord include disputes over borders, security for Israel if a terrorist group like Hamas controls the West Bank, and “right to return” for about 5 million descendants of the current refugees, including great-great grandchildren who live abroad and are citizens of other countries.

But perhaps the greatest impediment to peace is UNRWA’s brainwashing of Palestinian children to hate Jews and Israel. UNRAW-funded schoolbooks teach that Jews are Zionist foreign gangs that want to eradicate the Palestinians, that they release wild boars to damage Palestinian crops, and that they have no legitimacy as a country or claim to the Holy Land because they stole it from the Muslims.

In the newest textbooks, used from grades 1-12, the name “Israel” was changed to “Zionist Occupation.” (Zionism is the belief that the Jews should have their own homeland.) A map of the region is titled “The Arab Homeland,” and shows Israel, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank all in one color, labeled “Palestine.”

The schoolbooks make no mention of the possibility of Israelis and Palestinians peacefully co-existing.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center published a study of these textbooks, and in response, the UNRWA Commissioner-General said, “UNRWA is completely committed to the Palestinian curricula, and that no change will be made in these curricula."

Who was helping to pay for this dark destructive propaganda against our greatest ally and the only democracy in the region? I was, you were, and every taxpaying American was, to the tune of $285 million a year donated to UNRWA. (In all, the U.S. donates about $3.3 billion a year to the U.N.’s array of agencies and operations.)

World leaders have been pushing for an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since 1974, when a United Nations resolution called for the “two-state solution,” or independent state of Palestine alongside the State of Israel. 1

If today’s policymakers were truly in favor of a two-state solution, they would insist that this issue be addressed in Middle East negotiations. The poisonous indoctrination of young Palestinians needs to stop if there’s ever going to be peace in the Middle East.
