Why I Love Being Single

There are many benefits for being single, but here are a few that support my decision of not pursuing a relationship.

Society seems to plant in our heads that we need to be in a relationship when that’s not true. Why should we have to depend on someone else for our happiness? Sure, you may be in a relationship that’s lasted over ten years and you’re still head over heels for your partner, but that doesn’t happen to everybody.

My last relationship lasted two years and 9 months. This was back when I was 18; I’m 23 now. He cheated on me, but that’s not the reason why I’m single. There are many reasons why I choose to be single.

I am single because I love the freedom and independence it gives me. I love not having to ask permission from my significant other if I can go out with my friends for a "girls' night." I am free to make that decision all on my own without the conflict and hassle a relationship may give.

An article in Time magazine titled, "9 Ways Being Single Can Improve Your Life" by Candice Jalili, quotes Susan Winter, a New York City relationship expert, "'It's liberating to discover that we can enjoy our own company,' says Winter. 'Being content in our own company frees us from the need to chase others.'"

I am single because I am able to connect with my friends and family, and even create new connections with coworkers or classmates. Being single gives me the chance to embrace my relationships and spend more time with those I care about rather than always by my partner’s side. I choose how I spend my time, and spending time with those important to you is what matters most.

I am single because I love learning to love who I am and enjoy getting to know who I am. As I continue to grow on this journey of life, I realize that what’s most important is my happiness. When single, you are able to grow confident in who you are and continue to do so without the need to chase others for happiness when it’s already inside you.

If, and when, the time comes, I choose to find a partner, I must allow myself to be truly happy in my own company. Being single is the best decision I have ever made.
