Why We Hate School

There is always a reason why children who love school don’t want to go to school.

Within the last five years, I watched three children who enjoyed going to school to hating school.

In talking to the children, they said, “When we started school it was a new experience away from our parents, and we had to make our own decisions, but if we got scared we could still run to our parents, and talk to them about our problems, or our anxiety about the problem.”

The children went on to say that for the first six-years school was fun, that they learned to read, they learned math, they learned history about our country and other countries, that they learned how to socialize , and were taught how to play different types of sports.

But as going to school continued, school stopped becoming fun and turned out to be boring. Part of the problem was the teachers, school subjects, interaction with other students, bulling, and the feeling of some children that they are better than me.

Many times It felt like the teacher never gave me a chance to show that I could do the activity just as good as the next person, in other words, I never got a chance to prove that I can do the activity.

One of the children came up to me and ask if I could help her in her math and I said, “Yes.” After reading the math problem, I was lost and I told the child that I had no clue on how to solve the problem.

She looked at me and said, “I was absent the day the teacher explained the problem. I went up to ask the teacher how to do the problem, but he was so busy I just walked away thinking that I could ask another child.”

She went on to say, “Everyone I asked said that they were also confused and did not know how to solve the problem.” I said that she should go back and ask the the teacher again.

“ I am scared,” she said, “because he would get mad at me and think I am stupid because I don’t understand how to do it.”

This is only one reason, why a kid would not want to go to school because he doesn’t want to be embarrassed.

There is always a reason why children who love school do not want to go to school.

Of course there are children who just plainly hate school for other reasons: can not read or write; bad attitude about schools; problems at home or with other students; teachers who won’t give children chances to succeed, because they always call on their favorite student to give answers.

Now the question is how do we solve these problems about schools?
