What's Wrong with a Photo ID When Voting?

We show ID when cashing a check, getting on an airplane or proving it's you who's really vaccinated. Why not show a photo ID when voting?

I consider myself pretty moderate.

When it comes to voting, I agree with liberals who say we should do everything possible to make it easier for people to vote.  Voting is what makes America, America.

So I get really get upset when I hear about Republicans reducing polling places, removing drop boxes and the like. Seems anti-American, to me.

And the idea that Capitol Hill rioters were going to pressure Mike Pence and other Republicans to overturn the 2020 election -- and that so many Republicans willingly went along with this -- is truly shameful.

But on the issue of photo IDs, I think Republicans make a point. They think voters should show a picture ID when casting their vote.  This doesn't seem unreasonable.

If you fly on an airplane, you need to show ID.  My wife and I went to a function recently, and, in addition to showing we were vaccinated, we had to show a photo ID to prove we were really the ones who got vaccinated.  If you go to a bank and open a bank account, they ask to see your photo ID.

So I'm not sure I understand the objection to showing a photo ID when voting.  What could be so bad about making sure you are who you say you are, especially in an era when so many think there is fraud in our electoral system?

Here in California, when you go to the DMV, you can get an ID without getting a driver's license. There's no excuse to not have an ID -- at least not one I can think of.

I'm not 100% sure about mail ballots, but I think they can be sent out with a bar code or an individualized number, so when you return it, they know you are you.  If they don't do this, they should.

Republicans say the Dems stole the 2020 election. These same Republicans say the Dems are totally incompetent and can't manage their way out of a paper bag.  But to steal the election and leave no fingerprints would require real talent.

I think, even if we required photo IDs when voting -- and numbered all the ballots so we know who's voting -- Republicans would still claim fraud. But as we take away their excuses, it will become harder for them to claim fraud with a straight face.

It also doesn't seem unreasonable to cut off registration a week in advance of an election. If you know you are going to vote, you should register! If the vote-counting machinery needs a little time to absorb all the new voters and make sure they really are voters, I think that's reasonable.

I personally don't think there is fraud in our elections. Maybe a vote or two here and there, but not on a grand scale. The 2020 election has been concluded, audited and litigated -- and some people still can't accept the results.

When it comes to politics, emotion overpowers logic, it seems. It's now all about winning.
