What's So Great About Fashion?

Listening to fashion gurus is a waste of time

The American woman has been listening to the fashion gurus for too long. Why do we follow blindly as people we don’t know tell us what we should be wearing this season? How many new ideas can they come up with? I find that if I don’t throw things away, one day in the future, some designer will tell me that the right thing to wear is something I wore twenty years before.

My husband complains that I tend to keep my old clothes and never give anything away to charity. What he refuses to recognize is that hardly anything is ever new. What we are fed is a concept. If you want to look like you have money, you will be sure to wear what’s new in fashion. From my perspective, what we are told is what they want us to hear so that we will take our hard earned dollars and go to stores or turn to a station on television that will try to con us into believing that what they sell is something new and different.

How many times have I gone into a store and seen clothes that remind me of something I wore in 1972? It is 2017, and if I dig in my closet, there will be something almost exactly like what is being sold as the latest in fashion. Nonetheless, people who weren’t around in 1972 believe that long skirts are something brand new. Well they aren’t. It’s just a fraud as far as I am concerned. I did it before, and I can do it again without their help.

Some of the best clothes I own were bought in thrift shops. The ladies who follow fashion’s dictates wouldn’t be seen dead in something that was considered high style last year. I’ve learned to play their game. Between what I refuse to throw away and what can be found in my local rummage store, I rarely have to buy something new.

Undoubtedly, what I am saying here will disturb the fashion industry. How can they keep women buying if they come to recognize that very little that refers to itself as high style isn’t what women like me wore in the past.

I am not suggesting that buying something new isn’t fun. Take a look at the glazed expression on women’s faces as they make the rounds of their favorite department store. Naturally, we all want to look prosperous and up on things. What would happen to the people out there who sell clothes, and beyond that, might recognize the fraud that is being perpetrated on us put a lot of people out of work? The truth is that what I need is a new iron, so I can get the creases out of the stuff I’ve kept.
