What Is Happening in Vegas?

This morning I received an e-mail from someone who lives far away. The question he asked me dealt with the question of anarchy in Las Vegas.

This morning I received an email from someone who lives very far away on the other side of the world.  He asked me a question that I would very much like to answer in light of my own experience.  The question dealt with an issue that has not occurred to me of late.

When my husband and I moved to Las Vegas thirty years ago, back then the law was determined by what were known as "the boys." These were the members of the Mafia who had found a comfortable nest in this city, and thus controlled the gambling industry.

One could argue that what existed in Vegas was in a sense anarchy, or a total disregard for the law of traditional government. These people made their own law.

As years passed. the gambling industry gradually became the property of big business, who one might suggest determined what would happen in the gambling industry. That did not preclude the existence of governmental authority.

It might be arguable that big business today does use its power to control the casino industry and many other aspects of our society. The election of Donald Trump is the product of the power that money wields in this country.  American politics is manipulated by those who can contribute the largest sums toward the election of specific people.

Although Las Vegas has the reputation for being a particularly dishonest city, it is clear to any American who follows what goes on in the political arena that big business keeps the power in the hands of the rich, regardless of what American city one studies.

Anarchy will remain the status quo as long as we live in a society where class rules. The law is determined by government, but how it is used appears to be the province of the rich.
