“In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.” - Friedrich Nietzsche

Covered faces, repetitive chants, nonsensical shouting, harassment, demonization, accusations, physical obstruction, and brawls. No, it’s not the latest fictional dystopian Netflix or HULU original. It’s becoming our everyday norm anytime a group of people doesn’t get their way in the political world.

The tension is ramping up and the potential for violence is increasing by the minute. Both sides, as usual, are justifying the mob behavior by saying it’s in reaction to what the other side is doing. Totalitarianism in its initial stages is percolating just below society’s surface.

The French doctor, scientist, and philosopher, Gustave Le Bon contributed to crowd theory, arguing that crowds are not the sum of individuals, but become a single entity that can be manipulated and used to influence outcomes. Some notable people he influenced with his theories using them for totalitarian purposes were Adolf Hitler, Vladimir Lenin, and Benito Mussolini.

Fast forward to our country today, we see the all too frequent similar-looking protests that are stuck in groupthink. We are solidly entering a period where critical evaluation, analysis, and free individual expression are not only discouraged, they are also severely punished. And those who have an independent thought are ostracized and attacked until they will apologize for such an egregious sin.

The courts of social media have replaced the courts of Salem, dispensing an unhealthy stream of groupthink extremism with no due process required.

Discouragingly, we have a current president and former presidential candidate along with a host of other political clowns (the Stephen King scary kind) actually promoting anarchy and violence in a very deceptive way typical of dishonest politicians. Have we really become so far removed from knowing the horrors of a violent revolution that we are eager to return to that dark place?

Also, let us not forget about Russia and other countries that are using social media to influence the internal workings of our country.

This goes far beyond favoring Trump in the most recent presidential election. That is peanuts compared to sowing the seeds of violent confrontation by those blindly following the groupthink of their respective sides. That is also why civility is so critical at this moment in our history to the survival of our democratic republic.

Not any one political leader, but we ourselves collectively are creating a 1984 like world for ourselves, by turning a blind eye to a fatal groupthink and failing to understand what is truly happening to our society. Our leaders and the press are continuing to stoke the flames of totalitarianism.

It is time for us to stand up and say that we are mad as hell, BUT we refuse to be used by those that sow hatred and violence, and we will be civil to each other because we the people are all we’ve got.

Start today. To quote a line from a film that’s more relevant than ever, Meet John Doe, “Don’t wait until the game is called on account of darkness.”
