Tulsi Gabbard Could Trump Trump

Out of all the candidates, Tulsi Gabbard poses the greatest threat to Trump's re-election.

As per the leading national polls, the frontrunners in the democratic race are Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Kamala Harris. However, the chances of any of them beating Trump are slim.

To many Republicans and Independents, Joe Biden is another Obama, Bernie Sanders is a crazy socialist who will turn America into the next Venezuela, Elizabeth Warren is a fraudulent “Pocahontas,” and Kamala Harris is a race-baiter. None of these options are appealing to moderate Republicans or independents.

If one of the above secures the nomination, the 2020 election will be a Trump walkover. The red states will turn red, the blue states will turn blue, and most of the swing states will go to Trump despite strong feelings against him. While Biden, Sanders, Warren, and Harris would be better than Trump any day, few moderate Republicans/independents would see beyond their reputations and vote for them. Similarly, some Democrats will never vote for Trump even if he attains sainthood.

In order to compel moderates and independents to vote Democrat, the Democrats need a fresh face who transcends partisan politics and attracts crossover support. That person is Tulsi Gabbard.

Congresswoman Gabbard was the breakout star from the first debate. She was the most searched candidate on the internet. Several online polls, such as the Drudge Report, declared her as the winner of the debate. Gabbard clearly displayed her opposition to war and military intervention—her shutdown of Tim Ryan’s misinformation and talk of chicken hawks were some of the most popular crossover moments of the evening.

I have no doubt that a large portion of independents and moderate Republicans would vote for someone like Gabbard. For starters, Gabbard has been portrayed well in the conservative media. After the debate, Gabbard appeared on Tucker Carlson’s show on Fox news. Tucker Carlson is as conservative as one could get, constantly bashing Democrats and their politics. However, he had no criticism for Gabbard, acknowledging that her platform appealed to people on all sides of the political spectrum.

Fox News viewers also liked what Gabbard had to say-- the clip, which has garnered over a million views on YouTube, has 30k likes and only 1.3k dislikes. A Fox News video about Kamala Harris’s debate performance, on the other hand, has twice as many dislikes than likes.

Gabbard will only become more popular as she continues her campaign. In the future, she will bring the hypocrisy of supporting Saudi Arabia, a financer of terrorism, and factory of Wahhabi fundamentalism, into the national spotlight. Republicans will dislike her liberal views on matters such as women’s reproductive rights and DACA, but Gabbard would crush Trump in a presidential debate if asked about foreign affairs.

If Gabbard continues to build on her momentum, Trump should watch out.
