Trump's Alleged N-Word Tape: Why It Shouldn't Matter

Allegedly, a tape exists of Donald Trump using the most despicable word in the English language. Many are up-in-arms about it, calling for its release. Here's why I don't care if it gets released or not.

I'm going to be blunt, right out of the gate -- I don't care if there is a tape of Donald Trump using the "n-word." All that tape does is confirm for the umpteenth time something I, and everyone, admittedly, should already know: President Donald J. Trump is an unabashed, unapologetic racist who says, tweets, and tries to do racist things within his capacity as President of the United States.

His campaign was built with racism as an ingredient of its foundational slab. He has wantonly tapped into a toxic racial vein of U.S. culture that has never fully been bypassed. He has explicitly demonstrated his propensity for racial hostility for decades.

If anyone needs this tape to prove to them that President Trump is just the worst kind of person, then perhaps a little self-reflection is in order.

Why is there so much emphasis on this tape? Sure, "nigger" is the holy grail of racial insensitivity -- a word so vile and hostile and worthy of condemnation that, when used, can topple even the most powerful and influential among us. I

t's a word that exists solely for the purpose of denigrating an entire group of people, reaching its cultural apex when black men and women were on the receiving end of social segregation, brutality, rape, and murder at the hands of whites on a regular, governmentally-endorsed basis.

But that word isn't the only racial slur around and wouldn't be the only racist thing President Trump has said. It would be one of the most flagrant, sure, but it would exist alongside such chart-toppers as:

"When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best. They're not sending you. They're sending people that have lots of problems... They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists, and some, I assume are good people."

Remember this? This is how his campaign for president started.

“They’re trying to take away our culture. They’re trying to take away our history. And our weak leaders, they do it overnight. These things have been there for 150 years, for a hundred years. You go back to a university and it's gone. Weak, weak people.” Remember President Trump's commentary regarding the removal of Confederate monuments during a 2017 rally in Phoenix?

Remember Donald Trump acting as the general of the "Birther" movement against President Obama? His commentary on NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem? His usage of the term "animals" to describe MS-13 and Islamic terrorists?

The "fine people on both sides" at Charlottesville? Calling Maxine Waters "low-IQ" and Elizabeth Warren "Pocahontas?" Reposting anti-Muslim videos on Twitter? The Latin American "shithole" comments?

How about when he belittled the intelligence of Lebron James and Don Lemon earlier this month because he was angry that Lebron had the gall to speak candidly of Trump's awfulness?

Yeah, I don't need a tape of President Donald J. Trump using the "n-word" to know he's a racist. No one else should need it either.

The request didn’t seem all that difficult: Could President Trump’s spokeswoman say that he didn’t use the N-word on tape?...
