Trump: A Countercultural Phenomenon

If enough Americans are worried about the rise of the radical Left's nihilistic, Marxist culture, Trump will win reelection in a landslide.

In previous TLTs, I've analyzed the upcoming Presidential election in a variety of different ways. Here, my emphasis will be on culture. Based on how Trump won in 2016, I believe it's possible that the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic will have little to no bearing on the outcome of the election.

It's hard for me to envision that anyone who was willing to pull the lever for Trump in 2016 would decide not to do so this time because of an unforeseen pandemic that has been hyperpartisan and politically charged from the beginning. Those inclined to vote for Trump either approve of how he has handled the pandemic or believe that he has done the best he could under the circumstances, despite being constantly skewered by the Left. Likewise, those who aren't likely to vote for Trump will view his handling of the pandemic as simply part of the same old narrative that Trump is an incompetent leader.

So let's return to how Trump won in 2016 to give us a sense of what's going to happen this November. The key to Trump's victory was that he was a countercultural icon that resonated with Middle America because he campaigned for what he called the Forgotten Man. The Forgotten Man epitomizes those that have been marginalized by politically correct cancel culture and have seen their working-class communities hollowed out by the disastrous trade policies that are supported by the majority of the political class.

As the nexus of politics and culture has shifted to the coastal urban elite, Trump has stayed true to his base and signals to them that he shares their values. Trump's disapproval of the NFL players who kneel for the national anthem is a great example of this. Ordinary men and women have unwavering respect for the American flag and view this country as an overwhelmingly positive force in the lives of Americans and for the preservation of peace and freedom worldwide. Trump has a flair for the patriotic, always emphasizing his support of the military and boasting of America's strength and determination on the world stage.

In 2020, the media and political elite are once again trying to rewrite this script, emphasizing that the forces we typically view as brave and patriotic are actually ill-intentioned and racist — namely, the police. Since George Floyd's death, there has been a never-ending media onslaught praising Black Lives Matter and justifying the irrational and even violent protests that have plagued our cities. This movement has even invaded the sports world, as it seems that the radical Left will stop at nothing to brainwash the entire population, even those who are otherwise politically disinterested sports fans.

Now Trump represents our biggest cultural taboo, which is to denounce the protests and support the men and women in blue that keep our streets safe. If Biden wins, the radical Left's nihilistic, Marxist culture will infect our daily lives. If enough Americans are worried about this, Trump will win decisively.
