President Trump's appointed head of the EPA, Scott Pruitt, runs the very agency he used to despise. Instead of upholding the rules the agency was created for, he plans to tear them apart. What does this mean for our future?
I admit that nearly every appointment made by President Trump has made my stomach churn and blood boil, but none so much as Scott Pruitt. The newly appointed head of the Environmental Protection Agency has many qualities, none of which point to his ability to adequately protect the environment.
Since his time as Oklahoma's attorney general, he has advocated for the fossil fuel industry. He sued the EPA 13 times during his time there over regulations on air pollution for power plants. Someone whose ideas differ that strongly from the agency might want to find another line of work. However, I think Mr. Pruitt is right where he wants to be.
Emails that the ACLU have sued to acquire reveal Pruitt's loyalty clearly and that loyalty lies with the fossil fuel industry. Pruitt has long been a member of The First Baptist Church of Broken Arrow whose evangelical roots and ideology claim that the bible gives mankind the right to use the earth in any way it sees fit.
Many of these far-right thinkers also believe that climate change is a hoax, or at the very least, not cause by human activity. I am not attacking religion here, I am only advocating for mounting scientific evidence that climate change is real and due mostly to human activity.
Pruitt has been instrumental in the deregulation this administration has become known for. From leaving the Paris CLimate Accord to ending the fight against coal, Scott Pruitt has been involved. I guess what really blows my mind here is that in a nation supposedly built on laws how all this can happen. Anyone that becomes an elected official in any capacity should not be pushing aside scientific evidence in favor of "their" interpretation of the bible, or any other religious text for that matter.
Protecting the environment should not even be a partisan issue, but somehow has become one. Anyone who has children wants to give them something better than they themselves had. Why should it be any different with the earth? I think Mr. Pruitt, along with Donald Trump and the rest of his cabinet are out to further their own interests, along with their corporate friends.
EPA Administer Scott Pruitt.
