Top 3 Reasons "Joker" is the Best Comic Book Adaptation of All Time

Why Phoenix's "Joker" is the greatest comic book film of all time

3. The Tone

The tone of the film is something to admire. Mirroring Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver from 1976, Joker takes on the dark and gritty tone of the inner city and develops something beautiful to match. While many Marvel movies have a light-hearted and fluffy tonality to them, Joker gives us something different in this comic book iteration.

Many DC Comics films implement this dark and gritty tone to the point that they seem depressing. Batman Vs. Superman anyone?

Joker is able to transcend that tone and give us something unique as a whole, using its R-rating as a liberating opportunity to do what it needs to.

2. It's Unique

Speaking of uniqueness, the reason Joker is able to stand apart from other comic book movies is because it doesn’t belong to any franchise or series – as far as we know. Many superhero and comic book iterations are situated within an ever-growing franchise like the MCU or DCEU. Unlike those movies, Joker is designed to be a standalone film and not part of a larger cinematic universe, despite that a sequel is possible.

A comic book film that is able to stand on its own two feet and walk away successfully is impressive. Not many movies can do that, so this is a remarkable feat.

1. It has the greatest Joker ever put to screen

Many people will argue that Heath Ledger is the greatest Joker of all time. While I agree that Ledger is a spectacular Joker, I don't think he is the best. In The Dark Knight, the Joker (as brilliant as he is) only appears as a villain who causes mayhem without reason. We as the audience are only given a dusting of the Joker’s backstory, and the Joker changes the story every time someone asks him how he got his scars.

Phoenix’s Joker gives the audience a perfect character study of the villain with a complete backstory of his life before Batman, which makes the audience feel more sympathetic towards him as the film progresses. In the Batman movies over the years we've seen some remarkable Jokers, but Phoenix’s Joker gives us a superior character arc and more depth to the villain.
