Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Another Respectable Amazon Prime Series to Watch

If your looking for an action-packed series with some thrill and suspense, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan has been one of Amazon Prime's most popular series to watch.

I recently decided to watch another series on Amazon Prime and decided to give  Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (or Jack Ryan) a try. Created by Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland, the show is adapted from the popular fictional character Jack Ryan and by the notable author Tom Clancy.

The series stars John Krasinski as Jack Ryan, the former Marine, CIA analyst, and protagonist, and Wendell Pierce as James Greer, Ryan’s boss under the Terror, Finance, and Arms Division (T-FAD).

The show starts off with Ryan at his low-level office job at T-FAD, confined to his desk and computer. He then works his way up from his bureau and gets involved in the dangerous frontlines trying to chase down dangerous terrorists and corrupt politicians.

Season one delivered the key elements that you want to see in similar political action/thriller series. You get a good dose of action, mystery, engaging plot that compels you to want to go further into each season, and overall complex characters that play their parts well.

However in season two, I felt the direction and script went a step below season one. In terms of the show’s writing, it had many examples of well-executed moments like in the previous season, but there were many instances of inconsistent writing that kept a potentially better show from being shown.

Compared to season one, which balanced its unrealistic moments with an organized main storyline, it felt like in season two writers went a bit way off from the respectable storytelling in the first season and created a story filled with many unexplained plot holes.

There were many moments where characters make mindless decisions and the producers seemed to try to turn the show into a Jason Bourne action fest instead of a well-balanced political thriller with more mystery and suspense.

Consistently enough, the characters and actors probably were the backbone that carried the show positively, regardless of some of its flaws. Krasinski did a decent job portraying the popular Clancy character of Jack Ryan  and  Wendell Pierce was a witty co-star. They both don’t start off on good terms in the beginning of the season but toward the end of season one and into the second season, their bond grows stronger with good chemistry.

Another critique is while I do feel most of the actors did a fine job in their own characters, some characters felt misplaced and underdeveloped throughout the series. There were many characters that were introduced for a while and either simply didn’t serve good use to the main story or just disappeared without much explanation.

Overall Jack Ryan isn’t some transcendent series that will change your life and wasn’t the best show I have watched recently. Regardless, if you just want to have a good time, this show can be a nice option to consider and does enough to make you enjoy its execution of its story.
