The number of those who are struggling with mental illnesses are on the rise, deaths and shootings frequent the news, and nobody can seem to agree on anything… except that we are all unsatisfied.

I’m not sure how alone I am in saying that my feelings on the state of life are just a general sense of exhaustion and unhinged.

The number of those who are struggling with mental illnesses are on the rise, deaths and shootings frequent the news, and nobody can seem to agree on anything… except that we are all unsatisfied.

The right thinks we should this, the left proposes that, many don’t like either, some worship billionaires and politicians. But nobody seems happy.

I just always get the sense that at our best, as a society, we are always uncomfortable. At our worst… it gets pretty bad.

I cannot seem to have a conversation with any friend without hearing about how tired and depressed everyone is. It’s also been interesting to watch others’ reactions to these confessions go from general comments of concern and support, to simply saying, “me too.”

The solution? I don’t think there is one.

I am aware that I sound highly pessimistic – I am. I understand that state of the world and of countries does not progress linearly, but cyclically. But that somehow makes it worse for me. How frustrating to look at history, just to realize that you’ve seen it all before. The cycle makes me dizzy – it makes me feel crazy.

Didn’t Einstein wittily remark that insanity was repeating the same actions while expecting different results? That’s how I start to perceive the world sometimes, and it’s maddening.

For a very short time, I did not understand those who wanted to live in willful ignorance of the goings on of the world. I do now. Being constantly concerned, angered, saddened – always reacting to the next new thing starts to take a toll on your overall health. I don’t have much energy to begin with, and constant media consumption zaps the little bit that I have.

I don’t know what to do except keep going, and I don’t know what to say except that I’m tired. I’m tired of it all. The civilized and uncivilized worlds are in growing danger, our existence as we know it drastically changes daily, and yet we’re still bickering over civil rights? It’s like having a paper cut on your finger and broken leg, but all the doctor will focus on is the paper cut.

Yet, this also just kind of feels like how it’s always been. We’ll continue to address the paper cuts. We may eventually cover the broken leg in band aids, but the leg will still be broken.
