This "I Misspoke" Line is Beyond Ridiculous

This is starting to feel eerily like the final months of Richard Nixon's reign.

I tend to see both sides of things and rarely get all that agitated about what's happening in the world of politics.  It's all a big theatrical production, with everyone playing their roles.

But this new excuse by Trump -- that he flubbed his lines -- is beyond repulsive.

Clearly he said what he believed in Helsinki -- he's been saying FOR YEARS now he didn't think the Russians were behind 2016 election meddling.

He embarrassed our country by sticking to that line of thinking in Helsinki, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

His sudden "conversion" -- that he now believes our intelligence agencies when they say Russia was heavily involved in meddling -- and that he should have said "wouldn't" when he said "would" -- feels even more embarrassing.

It seems clear the Russians know something about Trump that Trump wants to remain hidden.

The "Golden Shower" now seems almost comical. Would proof of this story get Trump bounced? I doubt it. We've almost come to expect such things from the guy.

I think the real story more likely centers on money laundering (with lots of Russian-Trump cooperation) and tax evasion.  Is it possible Trump owes big money to some Russian mafia types and that Putin knows all about it?

Would anyone be surprised if this turned out to be true?

What else can explain Trump's behavior?

He loves to rip and belittle just about everyone, including his own intelligence community, members of his own party, the press and American allies.

So why is he so obsequious when it comes to Putin?  There has to be something going on.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not 100% anti-Trump.

I think it would be great to see better relations with Russia.

I think members of NATO should pay their fair share.

Maybe something good will come out of the talks with North Korea.

I think our immigration system is totally broken.

If Trump's seemingly incoherent and chaotiic approach to these issues stirs things up, maybe that will stimulate some fresh thinking, long overdue.

But the constant lying is finally getting to me.  Where is the honor and the integrity?

This feels eerily like the beginning of the end for Richard Nixon.  At some point, members of his own party marched over to the White House to tell Nixon it was time to go.

I don't think we're there yet, but I think Republicans would be smart to begin planning an "out" should things go south.

I think Republicans would be SMART to support a law protecting the Mueller investigation.

Such a move would show they still believe in the rule of law and inoculate them a bit if Trump sacks Mueller, which could be the final straw in all this.

The time to do this is now, before Trump regains his balance from the Helsinki fiasco.

Should Trump get rid of Mueller, I hope all who stand behind such a move get voted out at the earliest opportunity.  What's more important -- Trump or America?
