Things Go Too Fast Today

Things seem to be going much too fast today, giving one a sense that life no longer resembles what it once was. With fast food, fast music and the feeling that we have lost the calmness that appeared to exist when many of us were young, we should consider returning to a way of life that offers people some quiet time and a sense of peace.

We live in a world of fast food, fast music, fast trips and more. When will things slow down? I wrote these words not long ago:

"If we take the time to hear, the music does it well. It slows the world around us, and we have tales to tell. Why spend hours wasting time when one wants to write a rhyme. Send it where it needs to go, saying thanks and going slow. That's the secret there to see, things change to what we want to be. Stop the race and if we listen, days get bright and even glisten. Cold or hot, dry or wet, one can choose the dream they get. It will come and so I know, life can bring a chance to grow. Someone sends a special gift, music there to hear. helping thus to see what's true, so happy days can come to you."

For a long time now, I have been writing poetry and sharing it with others. It helps me to better define how I feel about life, and aids in my recognition of why there are days when things are difficult to deal with.

We turn on the television set and voices are speaking fast. Sell, sell, sell and convince the audience that the product is good, never stopping to even take a breath, but doing the job you are there to do. And then there is the news. Someone wants to fill the minutes they have been given to speak, not pausing to let listeners think for themselves, and often leaving them confused and shaken.

What has happened to the world in which you and I are living? Everything seems to go too fast, making it hard to catch one's breath. We seem to be on a treadmill that never stops moving. Life has lost the serenity it had when I was young.

Back when I was a girl, the slow dance was popular. Families ate together and enjoyed a tranquil dinner. Friends sat and played cards, occasionally sharing their thoughts and experiences. Life was peaceful and one felt calm and less afraid. Today we wake to ringing phones and people trying to get us to listen to their sales pitch. All we want to do is to hang up and try to find the place where we can discover some quiet time to read a book or listen to beautiful music. It is still there waiting for us, and we must stop the madness and go back to sitting calmly and feeling a sense of peace.

Perhaps it is because I have lived so long that I have a difficult time dealing with the pace of the universe in which we live. There are days when I long for another era when life didn't go so fast, and one had the opportunity to stop and think. I fondly remember that time, and wish it could come again. We truly need this to happen. Therein lies hope for humanity.
