They Are Killing Our Children

Too much politics, conspiracy theories, and false reports are destroying political and social institutions, let alone sanity. And now with the measles outbreak, our children suffer a fatal consequence.

One can’t possibly imagine seeing his child die of measles or of any preventable disease through available vaccines because of the government’s irresponsibility and negligence, and also partly due to the people’s ignorance.

But the recent measles outbreak in Manila and its adjacent provinces that, according to the latest data claimed the lives of 146 children, is the consequence of the choices individuals in power made during the past three years.

Rodrigo Duterte’s government has chosen disinformation over facts, dirty politics over the welfare of his constituents, and insults and foul language over decency and sound policy. His selection and subsequent appointment of Persida Acosta, a fanatic and a religious one at that, as head of the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO), showed his commitment to falsehood for political purposes.

If there’s anyone to blame for the deadly measles outbreak, it should fall on the head of Duterte’s appointee. It was Acosta who politicized Dengvaxia, a dengue vaccine, demonizing the previous government for buying it from the French company Sanofi-Pasteur.

Acosta insisted on her allegation that the vaccine had caused the death of several babies, undeterred by the absence of evidence. Then she went on to launch a media and disinformation campaign calling all vaccines biological weapons designed to kill babies and to control the population.

The baseless allegations of vaccine-related deaths have scared the public, and as a result, mothers denied their children the needed vaccines that had been proven to save lives from contagious diseases like measles, chicken pox, meningitis, etc.

The PAO chief cannot deny the fact that she’s directly or indirectly responsible for the vaccine scare. And equally alarming has been the media’s reception of Acosta conspiracy theories, giving her free publicity despite the absurdity of her claims.

To date, according to reports, about 1.8 million children are unvaccinated, exposing them to contagious yet preventable diseases. WHO said about 2.6 million children in the country below 5 years old remain susceptible to measles, which is one of the most contagious airborne diseases that puts unvaccinated children at high risk.

The Department of Health (DOH), whose immunization coverage was on a historic low in the past two years due to the Dengvaxia scare, recorded more than 9,267 cases of measles between January and February.

Politics, conspiracy theories, and false reports perpetuated by the government have destroyed the very fabric of our political and social institutions, let alone sanity. Not only are our institutions targeted, but so our children, the very future of the republic.

From killing our children, to the government’s drug war, to criminalizing the young, to denying babies the life-saving vaccines, to political propaganda and disinformation, Duterte’s dysfunctional government is to be held responsible.
