These Wild, Crazy and Beautiful Midterms

There appears to be a lot riding on these elections: the fate of the planet, humanity, our prosperity, and our souls, but it shouldn't be that way.

I was chatting yesterday with one of my girlfriends who was devastated when Donald Trump was elected and is quite anxious about the midterms.

"I haven't entertained in years but I'm having a midterm election result party tomorrow. I even bought placemats with the Japanese artist, Hokusai's The Great Wave."

"Fun!"

"If things go badly, I'm going to start smoking again."

"When did you decide this?"

"4 a.m."

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."

And so it goes. A lot appears to be at stake for people in these elections and that makes me sad because I'm not a big fan of situations where there are only winners and losers. The losers are always unhappy and the winners are focused on holding onto their lead. So nobody really wins. I much prefer a win-win situation, one where people work together toward a common goal. Something where everyone ends up somewhat happy.

Right now, we've got a bunch of elected lawmakers who are running this country and being the political novice that I am, I don't understand why they are so focused on keeping their power and their seats, instead of working with each other to keep all of us living in the United States safe, educated, healthy and prosperous.

So if the midterms don't go your way, throwing in the towel, lighting up that cigarette, drowning your sorrows, or leaving the country isn't the answer. Stay engaged, write to your senators and congressmen about the issues you care about, and keep working for the changes you'd like to see. The 2018 Midterms appear to be ushering a new era of political activism in the United States!

Today is not Doomsday, it is a day of hope and an exciting time for our country. Record voters have turned out. People are passionate, motivated, and involved and are taking an interest in the issues. The citizens of the United States are showing with every vote how much they love their country, and as we all know, love always wins.
