The UFC is About to Get Exciting

If you’re not a fan of the UFC, but want to jump on the wagon of the fastest growing sport in America, now would be a great time. Not only is there a great fight this weekend, but there’s a whole smorgasbord of fights for the next few months.

Sunday, fireworks will be inevitable when two of the best strikers in the UFC enter the octagon. Stephen Thompson is possibly the flashiest fighter in the division, with a karate style based on kicks better than the punching of most fighters, while Darren Till is a muay thai boxer with bombs for fists who just KO’d an elite fighter in under a round, and made it look easy. Thompson has been the number one contender for years and is considered a veteran of the sport while Darren Till is riding the hype train with only five fights in the UFC and and undefeated pro MMA record. This is truly a battle between an immovable object and an unstoppable force.

Then in June, UFC 225 will feature a welterweight interim title fight, and also the title for middleweight. For the interim belt, Brazilian fighter Rafael Dos Anjos will square off against Colby Covington who has made noise in the UFC for some less than savory comments he made about Brazilians after a fight in Brazil several months ago where he actually called Brazilians "filthy animals." Dos Anjos will be coming in to derail Covingtons hype train, but shutting his mouth will be a cherry on top.

Then, for the middleweight title, the first Australian champion Robert Whittaker will defend his belt in a rematch against Yoel Romero who’s looking to make history himself by being the first Cuban fighter to win a UFC title. Their first fight was a five round war which was also the fight of the night where Whittaker actually tore his MCL in the first round and still found a way to win in a close decision.

A month later, possibly the best card in the promotions history will feature two title fights. First, Brian Ortega and champion Max Holloway will decide the featherweight belt in a fight featuring two of the most well rounded and talented fighters in all of the UFC. That will be followed up between a super fight between the heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who has defended that belt more times than any other person in UFC history, and light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier who was undefeated at Heavyweight before moving down a weight class.

Those will be preceded by possibly the best fight of the year between heavyweights Francis Ngannou and Derrick Lewis who are two of the most physically imposing fighters in the promotion. Francis Ngannou had the KO of the year last year (google Ngannou vs. Overeem) and lost in a heavyweight title fight to Miocic only because his wrestling was not up to the same level, but Lewis has said Ngannou has nothing to worry about when it comes to the takedown and stated that if the fight gets out of the first round, he deserves to be cut from the UFC.

Whether or not you’re a fight fan, the next few months in the UFC will be extremely entertaining.
