Now That QAnon is Here It Doesn't Want to Leave

Recent comments from US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene exemplify the growing threat of QAnon in US politics.

I must really hate myself because here I sit in the middle of triple-digit heat and in my infinite wisdom I have decided that I should spend time talking about Marjorie Taylor Greene. The new representative from Georgia has been making waves within the political community thanks to her strong support of former President Donald Trump and her even stronger beliefs about the QAnon conspiracy.

Greene has faced serious backlash from both sides of the aisle due to comments comparing mask-wearing to the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany. On Monday, June 5th, Greene held a press conference where she addressed the remarks and apologized, stating that “there was no comparison to the Holocaust.”

As much as I would like to end the story here, a more troubling piece of information was brought to light as Greene then admitted that she had visited Auschwitz before. This admission has led me to the conclusion that this whole press conference is an attempt by Greene to save face now that she has realized her comments are indefensible. Having admitted to visiting Auschwitz makes this apology from Greene hard to believe. In my opinion her comments on the mask mandates were meant to keep her QAnon base satiated, but the criticism levied on her was too much, so she had to walk some of it back.

This incident mirrors the previous piece I wrote on the hat store in Tennessee, the main difference being it's now a US representative that has shared these thoughts. It is an unfortunate circumstance that we find ourselves in, where such a pervasive mindset has made its way into the US political system.

It's not surprising that this mindset has become more popular with the spread of fake news, and unfortunately there are very few ways to combat it. You cannot humor their ideas because it will only encourage them and fighting back will only have the believers become more fervent; it is truly a lose-lose situation. The only possible answer that I can suggest is that the US begin to do a better job at educating people on how to discern between real and fake news, but talks on how to implement that are better saved for another article.
