The Tests Are In

Your tests don’t make you look better, Lizzy.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, our favorite Native American senator, recently underwent an ancestry test, to quell the taunts from those who have questioned her ethnic heritage.

Warren, who started referencing her Native American heritage when she began teaching in Ivy League institutions, has been scrutinized as not providing sufficient evidence to support her claimed heritage. To combat this, she recently underwent a DNA test, conducted in a Georgia lab by Professor Carlos Bustamante of Stanford University.

So, what were the results? After all, those high cheekbones suggest a deep connection to her native roots.

Turns out the test showed her DNA was “vastly European,” with the percentage of Native American DNA in her system ranging from 1/32nd to 1/512th. Not exactly the numbers one might expect from a self-proclaimed representative of the Native American community.

Now to give Warren credit, she was at least a fair sport and actually put the results out. It seems that, given the low numbers, she’s not lying, and is being forthright about herself ̶ a welcome trait in today’s political climate.

But at the end of the day, this shouldn’t really mean anything. It’s been a fun joke for years, with a Caucasian appearing woman pointing to stories about her high cheekbones solidifying her ethnic background. But at the end of the day, and this might be a surprise, a person’s ethnic or racial background isn’t a major factor in determining their political acumen. The article from the Boston Globe detailing this test explain how Warren’s test reveal her seriousness about running for office; how these results will provide an ironclad defense from President Trump and his gang of conspiracy theorists.

But despite the deep cultural connection Senator Warren shares with the Native American community, 1/32nd at best, the test doesn’t particularly make any difference. 2020 will still likely be a challenging year for the senator, and I imagine Trump and his supporters can find a different joke in the meantime.
