The Star Wars Movie They Should Have Made

I was wishing they had made a movie adaptation of the video game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, instead of what they did. Now, it is happening.

I have to confess: I haven't even seen The Last Jedi yet. I haven't really been excited about Star Wars after The Force Awakens was such a mixture of good and bad things.

Now I am. This is exactly what I wanted.

I have really mixed feelings about The Force Awakens. This might be explained best by comparing it to the prequel trilogy.

I think episodes I–III could be described as a good idea executed badly. They showed us more of the Star Wars universe and told the story of how the Republic became the Empire, which was exactly the right thing to do. At the same time, they had clumsy details and some bad acting – even The Revenge of the Sith, which was still awesome overall.

Well, The Force Awakens was the exact opposite, a bad idea executed well. It was almost ridiculously derivative of the original trilogy, and it shrunk the universe back again by making the New Republic nonexistent, and burying the original Expanded Universe's fruitful idea of Jedi becoming more common again.

At the same time, of course, it was fun to watch, inclusive, and put a clever twist on the villain, and even brilliantly made lightsaber combat novel again, by having it done in emotionally charged situations by people who weren't very good at it.

Overall, I was left with the feeling that Disney was selling out to a calculated appeal to nostalgia with their, "No, it's not another Death Star because it's bigger" plot. And that is exactly what made me think they should have just made a movie or three based on the video game, Knights of the Old Republic.

KotOR is what you get when you take what's good about Star Wars and have it developed further, I dare say improved, by a team of brilliant video game writers. It's one of those computer role-playing games that have real depth of story, and it may be the best game I've ever played.

KotOR is also very much Star Wars, full of familiar elements... but it takes them in new directions instead of having a bigger Death Star to blow up. For one thing, you do blow up something big in the ending, but it's something otherwise genuinely different. Taking place thousands of years before the original movies (and some time before the Old Republic MMORPG), it also expands the universe in interesting ways, thus incorporating what was good about the prequel trilogy too.

The writing, the characters and especially the plot are just amazing. By the way, don't go read about it anywhere. There are twists that may be instantly spoiled even by reading the beginning of a plot synopsis, since they're so well set up from the beginning.

So basically, the KotOR story gets full points for both nostalgia and originality, and it's just awesome regardless.

And now they are planning a movie or three about it. That's amazing, even if it doesn't fix The Force Awakens.
