The Sorry State of Journalism in America

The profession beclowns itself with a flurry of year-end idiocy.

The mainstream media in the United States concluded the annus horribilis that was 2020 with an unfortunate series of performances that should be an embarrassment to the once noble profession of journalism.

It’s typical of the lousy job journalists as a whole have done all year in covering such issues as President Donald Trump’s impeachment, COVID-19, riots in cities across America and, of course, the presidential campaign and election.

How did fourth-estaters at year’s end continue the trend of shaming their craft? Let us count the ways.

On New Year’s Eve, leftist journalists and New York Times bestselling author Kurt “Keyboard Warrior” Eichenwald went on a Twitter tirade wishing “pain & misery” on Republicans. The Twitter tough guy went on to say he wants to find an “antimasker” and “beat them to death.”

Public affairs consultant and former Republican congressional staffer Drew Holden shined a spotlight on how the press ripped Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, while heaping praise on New York’s Democratic governor, Andrew Cuomo, on their respective responses to COVID-19. Holden notes that “by the most critical metric, deaths per capita, DeSantis has outperformed Cuomo enormously,” with New York suffering through what Holden described as “one of the most disastrous crisis responses in US history.”

Far too many allegedly dispassionate news reporters responded with ghoulish glee and morbid mockery to Republican Congressman-elect Luke Letlow’s death at age 41 due to complications from COVID-19. Never mind the late Letlow’s grieving wife and two small children, as certain journalists thought it more important to politicize the pandemic in the cruelest possible way.

The mainstream media isn’t even pretending not to be biased anymore. Two of CNN’s most prominent reporters covering the Trump administration openly stated they will be much less hostile to a President Joe Biden. At least that’s what showboating scrivener Jim Acosta — a glory hound of a man in love with the sound of his own voice — and fact check reporter Daniel Dale told The Atlantic. Naturally, the not-so-dynamic duo blamed Trump for the media’s never-ending hostility toward him, noting a new president would be less deserving of such scrutiny. We’re watching the media transform from watchdog to lapdog right before our eyes.

Finally, in a romance story that seems strangely appropriate for 2020 (along with this one), Christie Smythe went from being a married journalist in 2016 with a solid job at Bloomberg and a good life in Brooklyn, to a divorcee who quit her job and now lives in a Harlem basement apartment hoping “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli — in the midst of a seven year prison stint for fraud — will answer her emails. Egregiously violating journalism’s prime directive not to become the story, Smythe claims to have fallen in love with the vilified former pharmaceutical executive while helping to break the story of his arrest in 2015.

This list is not exhaustive. Look for more unprofessional journalism in 2021.
