The Skirball Fire: Photos and Video from Ground Zero (Updating)
I live very close to the Skirball Center (and The Getty). Here are two pictures I just took, plus a link to an amazing video someone shared with me. We just got a photo sent from Ventura, included here.
My phone squawked with that "Amber Alert" signal early this morning, shortly before 6 a.m. -- fire had broken out in the Sepulveda Pass, where The Getty Center, The Skirball Center and the 405 freeway all meet.
My wife and I stepped outside, it was dark, there was definitely smoke in the air.
Now that it's light outside (around 9:30 a.m.), I see little snowflakes of ash floating to the ground.
I estimate I am maybe three miles away from the fire. The sirens are going non-stop.
I can't get that close to the scene -- nor do I want to interfere with firefighting activities -- but I did drive over to a corner of Brentwood, where there's a pretty good view of The Getty from down below.
You can see The Getty Center toward the bottom middle of the photos; the smoke is coming from the other (east) side of the 405, on the Bel-Air side.
I have a friend who lives very close to the fire, on Linda Flora Drive, whose residents were told to evacuate early this morning.
I called her shortly after I got the Amber Alert and she was completely asleep. I told her she and her husband can stay with us if needed. I haven't heard anything from her yet.
I will be updating this posting from time to time. The following items were added around 12:40 p.m.
Check out this rather amazing video:
Here's a story I just found via THE LATEST that reports the Moraga Estates vineyard is on fire. I could drive there in five minutes from where I live. I was just there recently:
My ex-wife, Dr. Sue Hall, lives up in Ventura. Here's quite the photo she just took -- a five minute walk from her house:
Adrienne Maloof and her family have been forced to evacuate their home due to the dangers of the Los Angeles fires ....
