The Relationship Between COVID-19 and Eugenics

How COVID-19 is causing a rise in eugenic ideologies.

While sitting in my apartment and scrolling through Twitter to pass the time, I came across an article. A Chinese doctor had attributed the success of one of his coronavirus patients to the fact that he was of African descent. At first, I was not upset by the news; I was happy. There was hope for what was to come. It took me nearly a month to realize this was the wrong reaction towards such news.

Eugenics wasn’t a term I was familiar with until college. I’m sure high school science teachers didn’t want to explain exactly what that term entailed to a mix of 16 year olds. Eugenics in its simplest of terms means for people who have desirable heritable characteristics to only breed together and not outside of their race. People have taken this definition to ascribe it to many things that have nothing to do with race.

First, despite the various problems in the world in relation to race, race is a social construct and not scientifically proven. This can become slightly blurred in the wake of a pandemic like COVID-19. Many have been replacing the "corona" in coronavirus with "Chinese." It is very dangerous to use such terminology when there are still those who believe in eugenics.

Further, this is also a dangerous time to spread the idea that black people cannot contract COVID-19. Many people, like me, in the black community might believe such preposterous declarations at first glance. This could cause someone to not take as many precautions which would result in the contracting of the virus and affecting someone else.

It’s 2020, and though these are both dangerous and frightening times, we cannot spread false ideologies. This only causes more panic and violence against those believed to have caused the virus and those believed to be immune to it.
