The Real Reason Why AOC Gets Hate

The vitriol towards Ocasio-Cortez stems from more than a mere dislike of her politics.

“Here’s The Photo Some People Described As A Nude Selfie Of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.” This was the headline of an article the Daily Caller, a conservative news outlet, published earlier this year. The photos were quickly revealed to be fake, and the article was deleted.

Flash forward a few months. ProPublica released their investigation into a Facebook group joined by 9,500 border patrol agents. In addition to making dehumanizing remarks about migrants, agents had posted photoshopped images of Ocasio-Cortez. One depicted her performing a sexual act on an illegal immigrant. Another showed Trump forcing Ocasio-Cortez’s head towards his groin. A diagram of a man defecating on a woman was also posted, captioned: AOC.

No matter what you think of her politics, there is no denying that Ocasio-Cortez is a very strong woman. She is unafraid to challenge existing norms and institutions. She advocates for human rights when other members of Congress won’t. She constantly pushes for change, sometimes even disagreeing with those in her own party.

Essentially, she cannot be controlled, and some conservatives find that infuriating.

However, some Republican men’s irrational hatred for Ocasio-Cortez- which prompts some to fabricate revenge porn- transcends the congresswoman’s beliefs and actions. As a 29-year-old Hispanic working class female, she represents a shift of power in the political landscape- a shift that everyone knew would come, and one some always secretly feared.

“Facts don’t care about your feelings” is conservative pundit Ben Shapiro’s favorite thing to say. You know what, maybe he is right on this one. The diversification of those who hold power in America is a fact, and it doesn’t care about anyone’s feelings. The traditional social order is changing, and some Republican men feel helpless to stop it. So whether it’s a right-wing publication or border patrol agents on Facebook, they utilize the only weapon at their disposal: sexual intimidation.

The Daily Caller article and the Facebook posts are perfect examples of Republican men trying to slut shame Ocasio-Cortez into silence.

But the harassment is not limited to revenge porn. The right wing media is literally obsessed with Ocasio-Cortez. Fox News runs a segment on her nearly every day. From late February to early April, she was mentioned 3,181 times on the network. Hosts and guests shamelessly use belittling language when speaking of Ocasio-Cortez- for instance, Louis Dobbs called her a little girl while discussing her economic ideas.

Another time, conservative writer Eddie Scary tweeted about Ocasio-Cortez’s outfit in an attempt to discredit her.

Republicans in the media have called Ocasio-Cortez naïve, stupid, and dumb more times than I can count. They have every right to disagree with her ideas and politics. However, I believe that the degrading remarks about her general intelligence can be attributed to how women are subconsciously viewed as less credible.

No, Ocasio-Cortez is not perfect. But the immense backlash against her is unreasonable, fueled by underlying bigotry and misogyny.
