The President's Crack-brained Independence Day

President Trump is poised to shoot for the moon on July 4, using federal money and Washington D.C.'s emergency funds to hook his buddies up for VIP treatment at an extended Independence Day celebration inspired more by 21st Century Pyongyang than 18th Century Philadelphia.

The President is putting on a parade tomorrow. I know he says it's "for the troops," but let's not kid ourselves. He's going to make it about himself. He's like that one kid at every birthday party -- usually a classmate of the kid having the party -- who ends up commandeering the festivities and ultimately opening some of the presents himself.

He's secured military vehicles, including tanks, for the occasion. He's reveling in pomp and circumstance, turning the day we celebrate America's independence into an ostentatious yacht party fit for the most demanding ego in the free world.

He's created a VIP section, giving out tickets to members of the Republican National Committee, his re-election campaign, and GOP donors. From the steps of the Lincoln Memorial down the length of the Reflecting Pool, Trump's friends and other Washington elites will have a prime location for the July 4 festivities. It's likely not illegal, at least if the President can refrain from vomiting hyper-partisanship all over the front rows like a nightmare-fueled Gallagher show. It is, however, sketchy, and it is absolutely a bad look.

The only people who can still believe he's "draining the swamp" are suckers.

Making everything worse is that this bonanza, complete with a procession of militaristic might better suited for the amusement of autocrats in North Korea and Russia, is being footed by taxpayers.

The President's "Salute to America" is also proving to be a financial drain on the city of Washington D.C., as the additional security needed for the event -- thanks to President Trump deciding to attend the festivities, presumably as the guest-of-honor and making his entrance like Prince Ali -- has forced the city to dip into funds devoted to city security costs.

When you add this to the fact that the White House still has not reimbursed the city for the resources allocated to the President's dubiously-attended 2017 inauguration, among other charges for the President's outlandish and patrician splendors, the city's forced allocation of emergency monies to fund the President's imitation of Kim Jong-Un can only feel like a slap in the face.

And if that weren't bad enough, President Trump's Independence Day kegger will also be partly funded by tax revenue devoted to the National Parks Service for park improvements, because nothing says "Happy Birthday, America!" like taking a dump on what is potentially its best idea.

This whole thing is going to be expensive, but we really don't know how expensive. That information isn't out ... or it doesn't exist yet. But one thing is for sure. It appears to be shaping up to be an Independence Day celebration fit for a wannabe king.
