The Perfect Pairing of Two Narcissists

Paula White and Donald Trump: It’s a match made in heaven, if you believe in that sort of thing. Tell her she’s great (and write her a check) and she’ll declare you are doing the work of Jeee-sus. Flatter him for 15 seconds and he’ll testify that you’re a great human being. (Melania: this is what you chose – I have no sympathy).

Deranged and Dangerous

Does she actually believe that if she walks in the White House she can declare it holy ground because she is walking there? Undoubtedly. Does he actually believe he had the largest turnout at his inauguration and that this quarter’s GDP is the largest gain in the 1,000-year history of the United States? Undoubtedly.

The core value of the mental illness called narcissism is a need to be seen as greater, better, richer, smarter – and I guess holier – than everybody else. They actually believe it because their ability to get up in the morning and function depends on it. As the Mayo Clinic explains, “Behind this mask of extreme confidence lies a fragile self-esteem that’s vulnerable to the slightest criticism.”

People with narcissistic personality disorder have “an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration [hence twitters and speaking in tongues], troubled relationships, and a lack of empathy for others.” If you don’t recognize our president, pay more attention. Watch the entire video embedded earlier and you will clearly see it in Miss White.

These people are the most deranged and dangerous among us because they prey on those who are desperate. Who do you think fills those mega-churches? People who mail their January salaries as “first fruits” to the likes of “pretty Paula” helping her, no doubt, to remain so pretty. This is Trump’s precious base. (We’re not talking about the wealthy or those who always vote Republican 'just because').

There’s a power that derives from narcissistic certainty. People who are massively uncertain themselves need to be told what to do, what to think, what to believe. This is the raison d’etre for a magical god who takes care of all your needs IF you bow in the right direction, spout the right propaganda, vote the right way (and I do mean “right”) – and keep sending those checks.

Who do you think Jesus would support for President? I say Bernie. I'd also be willing to bet that the base would never support the likes of White or Trump if they had a decent job, solid health care and a sense of hope for the future. Not one of them. “Gay gazunt ahay,” they’d say (go in good health). “I’ll take it from here.”

Deal with the Devil

Paula in the White House is the impeachable offense, a blurring of the boundary between church and state in a way we’ve never seen. Mulvaney was right in a sense: quid pro quo happens all the time – although I don’t plan to get over it. Trump is just more obnoxious, more blatant and cruder than anyone else.

But alas, the Republican party seems to have made a deal with the devil back in 2015. I pray, in a way that only agnostics can, that we have that political revolution soon and give that base what they truly need.

How do we pay for progressive programs? Simple. Tax the mega-churches.
