The NFL 2023 Gold Rush Is On

Some football fans favor the NFL Draft, but Free Agency usually proves to be a more potent indicator of future success. In one week of furious trading, the 32 pro teams started blasting and digging, sending star players hurtling across the country. It is not too early to speculate on which teams will look the richest once the dust settles.
We have come to expect blockbuster moves in the NFL off-season. If Aaron Rodgers' jump to the Jets gets done, it will echo the moves by Matt Stafford, Russell Wilson, Tom Brady, Matt Ryan, etc. Turnover is even higher among non-QBs: receivers, running backs, and defensive stars. Our favorite teams could be unrecognizable by training camp!
Which teams will strike gold? Which will strike out?
I think the defending champ Chiefs got a tad weaker but remain the best bet in 2023. The Chiefs were eliminated by the Bengals a year ago but have otherwise dominated the AFC, and the conference is not taking this sitting down. At the top of the list of AFC teams girding and gilding for an all-out assault are the Jets and Dolphins. The already-loaded Dolphins made a big trade with the Rams for star CB Jalen Ramsey. The Jets are hoping to nab Rodgers and pair him with his top target, WR Allen Lazard. I think the other AFC contenders — Bills, Bengals, Chargers, Ravens, Jaguars — stayed about the same, and the Raiders (like the Packers) definitely got their pockets picked. Essentially in rebuilding mode are the Colts, Titans, Browns, Patriots, and a few other teams.
But the real fireworks were in the NFC. The Eagles survived the Free Agency gold rush quite well but only advanced in the QB room, signing Marcus Mariota. Their star safety, Chauncey Gardner-Johnson jumped to the Lions.
The Cowboys' D got a little shinier when they took edge rusher Dante Fowler and cover man Stephon Gilmore. The Saints stole QB Derrick Carr from the Raiders. The Falcons added TE Jonnu Smith (Patriots), DL David Onyemata (Saints), and star S Jessie Bates (Bengals). If you had any doubts that the NFC South is about to take off, look no further than the moves made by the Panthers, who own the #1 draft pick. Carolina took S Vonn Bell from the Bengals, adding to an already stout defense. The big finds came on offense, where the Panthers nabbed Eagles RB Miles Sanders, Vikings WR Adam Thielen, and Bengals TE Hayden Hurst. It is a lock that the Panthers will select a QB with the first pick in the Draft, although there is much debate about which college standout will be tossing the ball to those three.
As a result of the Free Agency moves so far, the NFC got stronger, especially the NFC South (not including the Bucs). The AFC East got a little stronger (not including the Patriots), and the rest of the NFL stayed about the same. For now, I like the results by the Chiefs, Bills, Bengals, and Dolphins in the AFC, and the Eagles, Cowboys, Falcons, and Saints in the NFC. I also like what the upstart Jets, Lions, and Panthers are doing, but it may be a little bit early to start talking about playoffs for those teams.
Next stop: NFL Draft.
