The Miracle of Computers

Many of us don't truly recognize how much computers have changed our lives.

I have made a discovery that is as clear as it can be. I need to write. Writing is the one thing in my life that makes me happy and asks nothing in return.

Today is my husband's eighty-fifth birthday, and I have written him two poems already. Writing them enabled me to say what I might not have been able to communicate as well verbally. I sent them to him via e-mail.

Writing has been my method of communication from as early as childhood. So many things I wanted to say were much easier to share when I put them on paper.

Now at eighty four, the habit of a lifetime has remained, and as I sit here at my computer, I am sure that this is true.

I wonder how many of the people who write for The Latest have spent their lives developing the same habit. It would be interesting to hear if some of my readers have found their computers helpful friends as well.

My vision of this blog is that it improves a marvelous outlet for many of us who spend most of our lives at home and are unable to get out of the house to share time with others. Admittedly, I am such an individual.

At this age, and living in the horrible summer heat of Las Vegas, were it not for my writing, I would be bored and lonely. What The Latest has offered me is a door to the world outside of my apartment. My curiosity has initiated this article, and I have to wonder how many people are sitting beside me in the same boat? That is the question for which an answer from some of you would be a true gift for this old lady.

You might be interested in knowing that I have been writing a "poem of the day" every afternoon for my daughter who lives far away, and who is quite ill. She has responded that the poems have been helpful, and that makes me feel productive, and a direct participant in her recuperation.

It's hard to remember a time when computers didn't exist. It would have been necessary that I find a way to get to the mail box that is quite a distance from my apartment, and is located in the main building of the place where I live to mail a typewritten poem to her each day. Now I am blessed with the wonderment of electronics that takes my words and delivers them to her home the same day, in actuality in a few minutes.

How blasé many of us have become living in this new world where communication has become so different for individuals like me. I am thankful for the gift I also received today. That is the opportunity to communicate with my husband and now to write my "poem of the day" to a daughter who means very much to me.
