The Mentality of Expectation

It's true: no good deed is left unpunished.

A mentor once told me that offering free help rarely helps anyone. People don't value the help, don't act on the advice, and expect everything on their terms.

In other words, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. Then there are times you feel like you’ve led it to water, built a filtration system that goes directly in front of the horse’s mouth and, still, all the water splashes out.

Maybe the horse gets a little bit. It isn't enough to save him.

I know I probably sound pretty esoteric right now. I get that way sometimes. I'm running a small group for bloggers who want to learn about SEO. I take the time to make simple two-minute videos to explain concepts. Short because no one has time and easy to execute tips from. I give tips and answer questions in the group as they come up.

Of course with any Facebook group, there are only about 10% that participate. It's a common statistic in the world. Only a few do the work, put it out for critique and ask questions based on the lessons. I’m beyond happy when I can help them.

Then there are those who don’t participate in the weekly tasks, don’t watch videos and come when they have questions they want to be answered specifically for them. Great question, did you watch the video? Of course not. Even two not-so-subtle prompts to check them out are left with a just answer my question vibe.

I don't know whether to laugh, get mad or feel sad for people like this. Someone creates a free resource group and you obviously have enough respect for that person’s expertise to ask questions but not enough respect of the person to see what they created. In other words, give me what I want on demand for free.

As I watch the dogs race to lap up the horse’s water. Maybe it wasn't a horse at all; those damn mules!
