The Letter I Would Like to Read: from Joe Biden to Tom Perez

My 2020 proposal is unique. I will pledge to run for only one term, and will select one of our young stars as my running mate.

Dear Tom,

I had hoped that 2018 would bring some rational thought to our politics, to our standing in the world, and even to our society, but the country remains in turmoil. I plan to run for president in 2020, with the hope that we can end this debacle called the Trump Administration.

The foundation of our democracy is the rule of law, but the constant attacks on the Justice Department and the judiciary coming from the White House have been treacherous.

Equally troubling, though, is the decimation of democratic institutions that may take years to repair.  A State Department, the FBI and CIA denigrated as part of the “deep state” by the White House. And the lifeblood of the First Amendment – a free press telling truth to power – demeaned as being an “enemy of the people.” The disgrace goes on and on.

What of our foreign policy?  How can a president consistently praise the leader of Russia, while dishonoring as “s***hole countries” the great nations of Haiti, El Salvador and those in Africa?  We have lost our leadership in the world.

Perhaps most troubling is our society torn apart by West Wing-sanctioned racism, bigotry and religious intolerance.  Do we need to know more than the fact that this president is celebrated for his words and deeds by white supremacists and neo-Nazis?

I wholeheartedly agree that leadership within our party must be passed to the next generation.    We have brilliant and compassionate young leaders like Kamala Harris, Julián Castro, Linda Sánchez and Cory Booker, to name only a few.

Yet when this debacle of a presidency ends, we will be obligated to future generations to immediately restore our democratic institutions, our global relationships, and the very fabric of our society – an idea built on equality, liberty, the rule of law, and most important, opportunity.

My 2020 proposal is unique. I will pledge to run for only one term, and will select one of our young stars as my running mate.  As president, I will do everything I can to mend and heal the relationships and institutions that have been so badly damaged by an administration so out of touch with our democratic values.

On Day 1, I will have the credibility to go to our NATO allies and re-affirm our unambiguous commitment to Article 5 of NATO’s founding treaty, to tell Mr. Putin to cease interference in our democratic institutions, and to rebuild foreign and intelligence services to preserve our security and protect American ideals around the world. And I will have the credibility to bring together an American people disgusted by the divisiveness that has become a part of our daily lives.

At the end of four years, if we have done our jobs right, the reins will be passed to the next generation. Let’s show the American people that while our ideals, morals and values may be challenged today, together we will survive stronger than ever.

Cordially yours,

Joe Biden
