In this week's podcast, Tom Johnson, former publisher of the Los Angeles Times and retired president of CNN, discusses the current state of media with THE LATEST. From media bias to coronavirus, we cover a lot of territory. We are presenting shorter segments of the interview in podcast and webisode version, as well.

If you are interested in the current state of media -- factual reporting vs. fake news, the influence of hyper-partisanship on cable news, legacy media via vs. the online giants, covering the coronavirus pandemic -- you will find this podcast MUST LISTENING.

See links to our audio and video versions, below.  This was all recorded on Friday, April 24, 2020.

Tom Johnson has been around the track a few times.  He started as a sports reporter at his hometown paper in Macon, Georgia; he served as a top aide in LBJ's White House; he later ran a TV station in Austin, Texas; he then became publisher of the Dallas Times-Herald.

Later he was the first non-member of the Chandler family picked to run the Los Angeles Times.  His last big role, before retiring, was to head up CNN as president under Ted Turner. He started at CNN just as the first war with Iraq broke out.

Tom Johnson has a LOT to say in this podcast -- and my co-host, Christine O'Donnell, and I -- were happy to let him talk.

Because this podcast runs long -- an hour and 26 minutes vs. our normal 20 minutes -- we are also breaking this podcast into two shorter podcast and webisode segments (18 minutes each).

Here's the first podcast, with the entire hour and 26 minutes:

In Podcast No. 14 -- 18 minutes -- Tom discusses his years at CNN and offers his take on media bias, fake news, the outlook for newspapers -- and the rise of the online giants:

In Podcast No. 15, also 18 minutes, Tom discusses his tenure as publisher of the Los Angeles Times.  It all started with great promise -- and indeed, many records were set that will never will be broken.  But then it all came to an abrupt and jarring end, sending Tom into a deep depression:

The first video segment (18 minutes) is presented here in webisode form:

Here's the second video, about Tom's years at the Los Angeles Times (also 18 minutes):

In the full interview, Tom discusses his first newspaper job in Macon, Georgia, his coverage of the JFK assassination while a student in Boston, the deep depression that followed his getting pushed aside at the Los Angeles Times, media bias, mistakes he made along the way and what he views as possibly the best-ever hiring decision he made while at CNN.

Tom also discusses how getting picked to serve as a White House Fellow changed his life -- and the need to mentor young people. In THE LATEST PODCAST, Tom offers advice any aspiring young journalist should want to hear.

Special thanks to our producer (and co-host) Christine O'Donnell of Bright Sighted Podcasting.
