The Importance of Constructing the Border Wall

The impact of the wall on upcoming midterm elections should be advantageous to Republicans.

In need of a boost for the upcoming midterm elections, Republicans in Congress and President Trump can exhale a great sigh of relief as construction on the border wall commences in San Diego. The new wall will be a much better deterrent to border crossings in the area. Last year alone, border patrol agents of San Diego Sector arrested more than 26,000 illegal immigrants.

This has clearly been a waste of time and money for much too long. It’s crucial that Republicans in Congress seize this opportunity to add a major accomplishment, along with tax reform, on which to campaign.

The practical needs for a southern border are obvious. The more secure the border, the fewer agents you need to secure it. Moreover, no migrants can pass through where there is a physical barrier, unlike the porous gaps between patrolling agents.

The results are fewer unwanted immigrants, less crime, and less burden on society as a whole. The initial cost of the wall will be covered many times over after getting rid of all these headaches. I would love to hear anyone on the Left give a reasonable and honest argument against these points.

However, the Left isn’t concerned with the practical benefits or drawbacks in the construction of a border wall – they are concerned about their own political power that rests heavily on the flow of immigrants into the country, whom they perceive to be future Democrat voters. Democrats in power greatly increase the voter base for their party by advocating for open borders and negotiating to grant amnesty for illegal immigrants.

The best way for Republicans to keep that situation from happening is to secure the border. Since the wall is a permanent, physical fortress that must be knocked down to be overcome, it is arguably the Left’s biggest political nightmare. President Trump is wise enough to understand this fact, likely being the only Republican candidate who would have been able to successfully push for the wall’s construction.

Although the Right is more receptive than the Left to the wall’s practical benefits, an equally motivating factor for them is the wall’s symbolism. Those on the Right generally tend to have a greater sense of nationalism and the idea of American pride and spirit. In its very nature, this way of thinking lends itself to wanting strong borders and having a sense of national identity. An unchecked flow of immigrants into the country severely undermines this premise.

For those on the Right, the idea is simple: America is a nation state and therefore has the right to control immigration with strong, precisely defined borders. Accordingly, many Republicans are single-issue voters when it comes to immigration and border security. Republicans in Congress need to remember this as they campaign for their reelections this November and boast the initial success of the wall’s construction. Doing so will greatly increase their chances of staying in office until 2020.
