Ancestry is something that tends to be forgotten or pushed off to the side. However, by unlocking one's history, a world once lost is brought back to the light.

Tracing back one’s ancestry is something that can be quite grueling. Many people have no clue where to even start looking and eventually abandon the task. However, learning about one’s ancestry is something that I have found to be fulfilling for both the researcher and their families. Never before known facts, photos and names shed light on family mysteries that had been seemingly forgotten. The discovery of one’s own history brings about a sense of excitement that can be achieved with a few simple clicks on the computer.

Sites such as Ancestry.com and MyHeritage.com provide users with access to billions of records. The only downside is that both sites require users to purchase a membership that, to many, may seem too expensive for them to afford. This is where my preferred genealogy site comes into play.

For the past few months, I’ve been using FamilySearch.org to trace back my ancestry. The site provides access to billions of records including birth and death records, marriage records, census records, and more at no cost. Users can build a family tree using the site and collaborate with other members to help clear up any discrepancies in the information attributed to a person on the tree. Furthermore, users can also help index records that have been electronically scanned to help enter them into the database.

Prior to using this site, I was only able to trace back my ancestry to the mid to late 1800s. Now, I have been able to trace back as far as 1720, and I’m continuing to go further.

Family ancestry is something that many people tend to push off to the side because it is a seemingly laborious task. However, by using the various tools accessible via the Internet and even one’s local library, watching one’s history unfold is truly gratifying for the time put in.

Passing along information has been something humans have been doing since the dawn of time. Whether it was through oral reports or written documents, we have always communicated new information to each other.

Over time, certain information gets lost in translation or is simply forgotten. With today’s technology, we can rediscover this information and preserve it for those who will come after us.

Ancestry is something that should be treasured and looked into more due to the bountiful rewards discovering our ancestors provides. Our history is ours to claim and is closer within our reach now more than ever.
