The Holidays Are Here: WHAT????

The holidays have quickly approached. As stressful as it gets, I love the challenge of finding the things that surprise those I love.

Welcome back FAO Schwartz just in time for critical Black Friday deals. As I read the report today, I felt both joy and panic. Thanksgiving is next week and I’m not sure how that happened.

As we get older, time seems to speed on by. I recall hearing a theory on this. Time is relative to our experience. When we get older, we naturally have more experience. The result is our reference points in time condense because there is just more to note.

As much as I understand this theory and actually like and agree with it, it doesn’t help me one little bit. For me, not only has time sped up, but so has my patience to get it all done. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the Grinch.

I love the holidays and love finding unique and special presents for those I love. To me, Santa is real, not because the jolly dude laughing is going to find his way down my chimney. I don’t have a chimney so that would be even stranger if it happened. But Santa is the miracle of the season.

When my son was younger and I was struggling to establish myself in my career, I often couldn’t afford the presents that would lead to Christmas morning mesmerizing awe. Yet that was my goal each and every year.

Maybe you would call it luck but I’ll call it the miracle of the season that every time a gig would pop into my work folder that I wasn’t expecting. It allowed me to make the day special and memorable. It was such a success that even my young child would say, “I know it was Santa because we can’t afford that.”

That is the miracle. At least it was for me.

Nothing is more gratifying to me than surprising my loved ones. Of course, our children are the first in line for our gifts. Now that he is older and knows that mom was behind all those Santa miracles, I hope he has a greater respect for the power of love and the will to succeed.

Now I’ll rush through and try to figure out what a low-maintenance teenager would love. I don’t need to make it a Santa thing, but in my heart, it still brings me the greatest joy to surprise those I love.

Get ready Black Friday, momma’s getting geared up!
