The Greatest Game You've Never Heard Of

An introduction to Dota 2, a massively popular online game and arguably the biggest Esport on the planet.

Two teams, ten players, nine towers to defeat and one enemy ancient to destroy. This is the basic premise of one of the world's most popular online multiplayer games, Defense of the Ancients 2 or, as it's more commonly known, Dota 2.

On the face of it, it doesn't even sound that interesting. Don't tell any nerds you know, but I'd agree with you. The real magic of the game appears when you take into account the number of playable characters and their available skills.

Well over a hundred unique creatures ranging from giant bugs to sentient balls of light turn this game from a farming simulator into a hectic battleground with a constantly shifting strategic landscape and a learning curve that looks like a cliff face.

With characters who shoot lightning and living trees that root you in place, there are play styles for everyone. Add to the fact that Dota 2 also includes items that further augment your chosen character and that steep learning curve disappears into the stratosphere.

It's no surprise then that Dota 2 attracts a certain kind of masochist. Someone who doesn't mind losing over and over again as they struggle to comprehend attack numbers and item builds. Believe it or not, there are over 700,000 people playing this game right now, and even more tuned in to watch the World championship, held this year at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia.

It was here that the biggest masochists of all (each player with tens of thousands of hours in the game), the much revered pro teams, duked it out on stage to be crowned this year's champions and take home the $11 million first place prize. Yes, $11 million for playing a video game.

Second to fourth place also won prizes from four to one million. This prize pool has only increased as the game has steadily grown in popularity year by year so it might not be too long before you see Dota 2 playing on the TV over your favorite bar while you mumble into your drink about kids these days and their item choices.

Although famously difficult to master, the game is really fun and there's nothing stopping you from jumping into a game and hitting people with your sword while running around aimlessly. See you in the game friend, and remember to defend your ancient.
