The Great Pretenders, Part I

It’s long past time we as a society stopped giving a pass to certain awful people and a few institutions that, quite frankly, ain’t what they used to be.

The zeitgeist of 2020 is lauding people and establishments undeserving of such kudos. Without any further ado, here are some folks and fixtures we should quit feigning as wonderful and worthy of praise.

George Floyd: Let's stipulate at the outset that George Floyd, 46, did not deserve to die earlier this year under the boot of a Minneapolis police officer. But let's also acknowledge that Floyd does not deserve the over-the-top sainthood that’s been conferred upon him in the form of three funerals — one of which was so ornate one could be forgiven for thinking a head of state had passed away — and a hologram effigy of the man that is to tour America and replace Confederate statues. (Just when you thought 2020 couldn't get any weirder.)

As a society, we should not be ostentatiously honoring a man who had a string of arrests for theft and drug possession and who did hard time for a 2007 robbery in which he terrorized a woman who was at home with a baby.

So-called protesters: Speaking of George Floyd, it was his death that sparked the current wave of arson, looting, rioting and violence sweeping certain major cities across the U.S. Of course, the press and progressive politicians refuse to acknowledge the people carrying out these misdeeds are not protesters per se, but criminals. These contemporary purveyors of massive property destruction and violence aren’t victims of state-sanctioned oppression fighting the good fight. They are mostly young people who have come up under decades of the twin false narratives that America is, was and always will be evil, and the elevation of group affiliation — mostly race — over individuals and individual responsibility.

Ignorant of history and human nature, these spoiled brats want to watch the world burn and then remake America as a woke, socialist utopia. They would undoubtedly be among the first to engage in weeping and gnashing of teeth upon realizing the new order they championed is not the collectivist paradise they imagined; quite the opposite. By then it will be too late.

The mainstream media: Meanwhile, the mainstream media continues to find new ways to embarrass the profession in the form of characterizing as "mostly peaceful" demonstrations that routinely devolve into arson, looting, rioting and violence for months on end, from Portland to Seattle — a hop, skip and jump from where this writer lives — to New York to Los Angeles and beyond.

That's to say nothing of the fourth estate’s hyperbolic fearmongering disguised as coverage of the introduction of federal law enforcement officers into certain jurisdictions unable or unwilling to quell said unrest. No doubt it’s part of the mainstream media's campaign to vilify President Trump at all costs, including, apparently, journalistic integrity.

Next week: more people and venerable institutions that don't deserve their good standing.
