The Great Democratic Iowa Caucus Debacle

The Democratic party continues to trip over it's own feet after a failed phone app causes confusion in the Iowa Caucus tallies. After a messy Iowa Caucus what can be done to give them a fighting chance in the 2020 election?

It has now been four days since the Iowa Caucus took place and now on Friday, Feb. 7th, a clear winner has still not been determined. The Associated Press (AP) shows that candidate Pete Buttigieg currently leads over Bernie Sanders by two state delegate equivalents, however they suspect that the numbers are inaccurate. The AP reports that there is evidence that the democratic party in Iowa has not accurately reported its results, including data missing from one of 1,765 precincts.

Among other notable issues that added to the confusing caucus was the use of mobile app known as the IowaRecorder app. The app was supposed to be able to accurately tally votes so that democratic precinct leaders would be able to share results more quickly. However the app turned out to be a complete and colossal failure and after doing some digging it is easy to see why.

Tech-based publication 'The Verge' reported some behind the scenes news about the development of this app and their findings were not surprising given the app's performance at the caucus. The app was reportedly thrown together in only two months time and according to tech professional the app looked like it was developed by a student learning how to program.

The app also bypassed normal procedures for apps and instead of going under review by Apple and Google the app used beta testing platforms to ensure the app would be ready to use by the time of the caucus. For some users they could not even download the app and those who were able to use it reported that it was filled with bugs and at times un-responsive.

In a time of easily manipulated statistics, misleading and downright false news, this app was a poor choice and a major flop for the democratic party and could have serious ramifications in the upcoming election. People already have a hard enough time distinguishing between propaganda and legitimate news, and the democratic party must do a better job of being more open and honest with voters.

The Iowa caucus was a disaster for the democratic party and if they do not make major improvements in how they have been operating they will surely lose the 2020 presidential election.
