Was the Godfather of Soul murdered? CNN's new series, Lost in the Woods with James Brown's Ghost, takes a closer look at the legendary singer's death that some of his family and friends call suspicious.

There was always something that felt sinister in the aura surrounding the legendary James Brown. He was so talented and so infused with an inimitable soul you can’t fake. You have it or you don’t. And he had it— unapologetically.

The Godfather of Soul had a complicated life, laced with disparate highs and lows. James Brown was a powerhouse of an international performer and a multimillionaire who had experienced lockup twice and had been accused of rape and convicted of spousal abuse.

In 1988, a day after Easter, the singer was charged with assault and battery with the intent to kill.

Brown’s third wife Adrienne, the victim,  said she thought Brown’s rage stemmed from life events along with drug abuse. At the time he lashed out at her, he was 55 years old

Earlier, Brown had been in trouble, too. At 16, he served 3 years in juvenile detention for theft.

Brown also had problems with the IRS. And his father’s stroke weighed heavily on him.

In spite of his demons, Brown was worth an estimated $100 million when he passed away in 2006 at the age of 73.

There is controversy surrounding the death of the 'hardest working man in show business' CNN has a new series, Lost in the Woods with James Brown’s Ghost, that will look into possible conspiracy theories.

Something to note is that Brown’s daughter refused to OK an autopsy on her father’s body. Dr. Marvin Crawford, who signed his death certificate, thought that was suspicious.

A friend of the singer and his wife, Jacque Hollander, said Brown’s last girlfriend and hairdresser Candice Hurst told her that James’ manager Charles Bobbit and she had killed James Brown.

Hollander said “Hurst was standing with Charles Bobbit in Brown’s hospital room. She was giving Brown some drugs, and the drugs were spilling on the floor and on her shoes, and Brown wasn’t dying quickly enough. And so Bobbit poured some herbs into a glass of water. He gave Brown the water. Brown drank the water, and then he died.”

Last year, Brown's manager, 4th wife, and son, among others, wanted the case reopened for forensic investigation.

Hurst told CNN that she never talked to Hollander about Brown and adamantly denied having anything to do with his death.

An interesting twist is that Candice Hurst had performed with Brown. She accused him of raping her decades earlier, but he was never convicted. Allegedly, she kept documents to possibly implicate him in the future.

Adrienne Brown died from complications from plastic surgery in 1996, so she will not be able to shed any more light on the investigation.

Whatever the court of public opinion is, this should be an intriguing series that delves into the heart and soul of one of the most charismatic and creative performers of the past century. Sit back and enjoy Papa's Got a Brand New Bag.
