The Five Best Beers I Had in 2018

Recapping my year in beer.

One of my goals for 2018 was to branch out in my writing and write about another of my passions besides sports, craft beer. Sadly, that was one area I fell short. I know in my "real job" they tell me if I don't document it, it didn't happen, so thankfully Untappd was there with me every step of the way! This list will be rather Northern California and Oregon centric as those are the places I drink from, but I will mention I was very pleased with my selections on my trip to Atlanta (future beer TLT?) In no particular order, here are the five best beers I had in 2018, as ranked and remembered through my Untappd.

Space Invader by Great Notion Brewing (Portland, OR) - I moved to NorCal right before Great Notion opened in 2016, so I heard about it through a Bay Area beer group I'm in, thinking to myself "yeah ok, you guys have a bit lower expectations than my sophisticated Portland palette." Nope! A visit to Portland in January revealed that the hype was real and then some. Space Invader stood out as a Hazy IPA that hit the spot! Sadly, it sounds like the folks behind the Space Invaders game don't see the honor in having delicious beer named for them, so this wonderful beer may have a new name for 2019.

3 Way IPA collab between Fort George Brewing (Astoria, OR), Holy Mountain Brewing (Seattle, WA), and Modern Times Beer (San Diego, CA) - Every year Fort George invites two other breweries to collaborate on a beer, which is that year's release of their 3 Way IPA. This year with Modern Times on board, it had to be good, and it was tremendously balanced! So much so that friends reported having difficulty tracking it down in stores and taprooms. Fortunately for me, a good friend had a large stock at his taproom and my search was painless.

Curly Wolf by BarrelHouse Brewing (Paso Robles, CA) - It was nearly 100 degrees on the August day I passed through BarrelHouse, a wonderful brewery in the heart of wine country. This 10.3% Russian Imperial Stout ended up in my taster flight and while normally I can't do stouts in August, this boozy stout was still light enough to be enjoyable along with the great maple and vanilla flavors.

Dank Shake collab between Alavarado Street Brewery (Monterey, CA) and Great Notion Brewing (Portland, OR) - What happens when you combine the best of NorCal and the best of Portland? You get a dank, juicy milkshake IPA with terpenes that adds a nice kick to this incredible juice bomb.

Passionfruit Parfait by Fieldwork Brewing (Berkeley, CA) - Pound for pound, Fieldwork is probably the best brewery in the Bay Area for the sheer quantity of beers they produce and quality they keep. Passionfruit Parfait was an amazing flavor bomb with just the right amount of smoothness to make this sour absolutely crushable.

Happy New Beers 2019!
