The Audacity of Chutzpah

Democrats apparently want to undermine democracy itself in order to defeat President Trump in November. That's "Chutzpah."

The Jewish Law blog cites one definition of "Chutzpah" as "a person who kills his parents and pleads for the court's mercy on the ground of being an orphan."

That sounds like like some current Democratic Party positions, for example:

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot blamed President Trump for rising violence in her city--after she issued "stand down" orders to police and rejected National Guard deployment in the wake of George Floyd "peaceful protests."

* New York Governor Andrew Cuomo blamed President Trump for coronavirus deaths in his state--after he sent thousands of infected patients from hospitals into nursing homes, spreading the disease more widely than in any other state. Fox weather correspondent Janice Dean holds Governor Cuomo personally responsible for the deaths of her parents.

* House Speaker Nancy Pelosi blamed President Trump for economic problems due to COVID-19--while playing "hardball" on coronavirus relief in Congress.

Vice Presidential nominee Kamala Harris blamed President Trump for the severity of the pandemic saying he failed to take it seriously from the start, despite never mentioning it in the Senate during impeachment hearings--among her subsequent contributions to fighting the disease was a requirement "to ensure health providers involved in testing, treatment and vaccines receive bias and anti-racism training."

* Likewise, Presidential nominee Joe Biden blamed President Trump for "tens of thousands" of deaths--despite his apology for initially condemning President Trump's China travel ban as "xenophobic." He called for imposition of the Defense Production act only after President Trump already had used it to for masks, ventilators, and tests.

Now Democrats are attacking President Trump over emergency funding for the US Postal Service--which has had little role in elections until this year for a very good reason: local election boards are designed to minimize the possibility of a politically appointed national Postmaster-General having much influence at the precinct level.

This is why we have the secret ballot, polling booths, and bipartisan poll-watchers. And why both parties traditionally opposed vote-by-mail schemes in the past--because it would be an open invitation to fraud and undermine the legitimacy of the process.

Every fraudulent vote cancels out a genuine vote, depriving citizens of their electoral rights. Which makes voter fraud a form of voter suppression.

Thus, mail-in voting ensures that every vote doesn't count.

Unlike stuffing ballot boxes, which theoretically is monitored and/or investigated at the precinct level, national mail-in balloting would be far more difficult to inspect--unless the Postal Inspection Service were to also serve as election judges in order to prevent ballot fraud (requiring a massive hiring spree).

Note that the state of Maryland alone will have some 30,000 election judges working in November. Multiply that by 50 states and we see some 1.5 million postal election judges might be needed for basic level mail-in voting supervision.

With no guarantee of reliable results.

Democrats apparently want to undermine democracy in order to defeat President Trump in November.

That's "Chutzpah."
