Thankful I Don’t Set New Year's Resolutions!

The perfect reason to not set a New Year's Resolution is that fate will almost always work against you.

Before the end of 2018, I talked candidly about not setting resolutions and really looking to set habits. Here’s why I am so thankful I didn’t set a New Year’s resolution to hit the gym in 2019.

But Kim, you said you were going to get stronger!

Yes, you are correct and joining the gym New Year’s Day was the plan. Don't start calling me a liar. But joining on New Year's Day had less to do with the resolutions of a new year as they did my health insurance plan. My health insurance has a program where you get reimbursed for your membership if you go.

Yes, one of those. Cool beans I say; I like being reimbursed! But I couldn’t sign up for the program until 2019 hit the calendar.

So what happens on New Years Day? I get sick. In fact, I spent nearly two weeks sick. You know the bug going around where everyone sounds like they are coughing up a lung, maybe two. That is what I got and it's not been pretty.

Had this been a resolution, I’d be down in the dumps about it. I'd feel as if I let myself down on day one. That isn't the way to start something new.

It's a small difference in how to look at it. Because my decision to get stronger wasn’t set by the calendar date, my mind doesn’t feel like I’m falling away from the plan. And I don’t feel the guilt to force myself to go sooner than my lungs want me to.

Tomorrow it is. A new day in the early part of the new year. I’ll hit the gym and get to work. After all, I do want to get stronger.

I am still going to feel like the typical New Year's Resolution gym goer though. I'll fit in with all the other newbies who can't remember how to use the machines and forgot there are protocol and etiquette to follow.

Oh well. Protocol nor etiquette made it to my goal or resolution list. The experts will just have to give me a wide birth until I figure it out.

To 2019 and your health!
