Summer Festival Season

A look at the joy of making the most of summer

I have to admit I'm a summer guy. Maybe it's because where I live is winter eight months of the year. But even so, I maximize every second of summer. Gone are the minutes that stretch into hours as a kid on summer vacation. Now hours shrink into minutes. So there's two highlights to my summers now, camping and outdoor music festivals.

Camping has become too much of a chore. If one doesn't book ahead, you ain't getting in. And then, if and when you do, don't dare even fart after 11, you might make too much noise for your neighbours only feet away (so much for getting away from it all) despite the fact the neighbours are running their generator 24/7 so their satellite and air conditioning are just right. Somehow a strum on an acoustic guitar is more offensive and noisy. But... there is nothing finer than that crisp, fresh air in the morning, the taste of the smoke on your hot dogs, steaks and burgers the panoramic scenery free of glass and steel.

Fortunately, one can combine camping and live music with the outdoor festival. The hardest part is choosing which ones to attend, there's so many now. Avoiding all the ones sponsored by the plastic corporations like a new strain of plague, I seek out the festivals with the up and coming bands, not the big ticket bands. Too many teenagers and douchebags at those. Bands like King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizards have the energy because they can taste it, and that energy they emit makes the price of admission. And gone are the days of getting so whacked-out-of-skull that all that is remembered is the hangover. It's the sights, sounds and smells that sweeten the memories. That stuff is almost as satisfying as the anticipation of leaving the city for the event.

So, here's my life hacks for having the best possible festival experience: 1) Check the camping situation and the distance to the stage from the campsite. 2) Over-prepare, Mother Nature hates outdoor concerts. And 3) Go with your gut in choosing the festival. Remember, Woodstock only became Woodstock because people went.
