Meet Representative Maxine Waters. She is the ranking Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee. Subject to ridicule not on her ideas but on her appearance by former 'Fox News' host Bill O'Reilly ... but still, like air, she rises.

Representative Maxine Waters  @MaxineWaters

Representative Waters is the U.S. Representative for California's 43rd congressional district.  She has been serving since 1991.  She is the ranking Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee.

On an airing of "Fox & Friends," now-former Fox New host Bill O'Reilly and others were watching Representative Waters on the House floor. Waters' speech include the following:

"We have suffered discrimination.  We have suffered isolation and undermining.  But we stand up for America, oftentimes when others who think they are more patriotic, who say they are more patriotic, do not.  When we fight against this president and we point out how dangerous he is for this society and for this country, we're fighting for democracy.  We're fighting for America.  We're saying to those who say they're patriotic, but they turned a blind eye to the destruction he's about to cause this country: You're not nearly as patriotic as we are."

During the speech, the camera often panned back to O'Reilly, smiling and raising his fist. At the conclusion of the speech, when asked what he thought of Waters' comments, he instead commented on her appearance, stating, "I didn't hear a word she said.  I was looking at the James Brown wig."

This isn't a discussion of whether you agree or disagree with the substance of Rep. Waters' comments. This is about a news host judging a woman, not by the quality of her character, but by her appearance.

Representative Waters responded: "I am a strong black woman. I cannot be intimidated. I cannot be undermined. I cannot be thought to be afraid of Bill O'Reilly or anybody."

On "All In" with Chris Hayes, Rep. Waters continued her reply: "And I'd like to say to women out there everywhere: Don't allow these right wing talking heads, those dishonorable people to intimidate you or scare you.  Be who you are.  Do what you do.  And let us get on with discussing the real issues of this country."

Whether you are for the right or the left.  Whether you are black, white or all the beautiful colors in between, heed Waters' words: Be who you are.  Do what you do.

Remember: They may  "...want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes?...  You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise." Maya Angelou
