Time to shift priorities, America!

Las Vegas. Greater LA. I was going to finish my travel triptych off with the beautiful city of San Francisco. But what can I say about this ocean oasis that hasn't already been expressed? Nothing. So, let's veer off and head north to Oregon.

Here is a gem of a city called Bend, where the weed tax money is being put to good use. I dare you to find a pothole. The laid-back, farts-still-make-noise-through-any-type-of-pants-you're-wearing attitude rings friendly. The night culminated in watching a hard rock band with bagpipes, The Johnny McCuaig Band, in a club full of roller derby girls skating across the dance floor. That's pretty cool on a lot of fronts in my book.

I could've ended the article there with descriptive praises for this obscure but beautiful place. But no, I continued north to Spokane, Washington.

Initially, it's a nice city with throwback architecture that screams 'artsy'. But once you park and head to the city's hub, underneath the style and grace is a whole different scene -- a situation that is seemingly ignored, at best tolerated, by the local denizens. I'm talking about the homeless.

C’mon people. I watched as you stepped around the destitute annoyances like they will leave a stain on your shoe. All the while, you're texting to your friend that you just Facebook-liked a cause you know nothing about from a country you can’t pronounce because Instagram told you to. You're beautifying the area with new fountains while closing homeless shelters. These priorities need to shift. Quick.

Congratulations, Spokane! You're not alone with this social enigma. It’s just somehow more prevalent here, probably as per capita ratio. It certainly doesn’t help when Portland and Seattle are handing one-way tickets to attend many of Spokane's fine addiction centers, a fact you won't see posted but verified repeatedly by those popping a squat under the overpass.

Is Spokane, Washington a microcosm of how America has lost its way? I hope not. Let's make this city, and all others across America, a beautiful city both in and out. Let's take care of our own first. My apologies for picking on Spokane, you were just the example, not the reason.
