Education Never Stops

No matter how long we live, there are always lessons to be learned.

I have been married to the same man for over thirty years. We are both in our eighties, and things sometimes become very difficult to handle.

Yes, we argue and have our bad days, but what I must remember is that we truly need one another for support. Growing old isn't an easy task, but knowing that there is someone in your life who is there when you need a friend is something important to recognize.

Problems arise many days, and the thought of having to face them alone is frightening. I must wonder whether I appropriately acknowledge how hard existence would be without him. This has been one of those days when the light dawned, and I must make a mental note to never forget it.

Life has been throwing issues in our direction that would be far more difficult for me to handle if I was alone. One has to wonder whether adversity is the best teacher human beings are given to open their eyes to what truly counts. Naturally, we would prefer that life be an easy road to travel. But two is a far better number than one when trying to move ahead.

I honestly believe that other couples like ourselves also need a wake up call. It occurs to me that someone like me may take the time to read my words. Naturally, I am in no position to know, but it seemed important that this message be shared with other readers of The Latest.

Perhaps my reader may have days when they throw up their hands, unable to accept that their mate is another human being with issues of their own. This does not preclude that being together when life throws that unexpected curve ball is far less frightening when one is forced to face it alone. Good friends are hard to find, and on this second day of May in the year 2018, I have learned an important lesson.

One has to wonder whether the only way that human beings are able to learn is most often the hard way. In retrospect, I suddenly see that what I have recognized to be true has come to me when my life was very difficult. If every day was a picnic, how would we ever in reality come to see the truth?
